Lizzie Bean makes a confident debut at Edinburgh Fringe, largely mining and examining her own life, and how for much of it she has in fact felt less than confident. Phuckets and Rainbows comes with a suitcase full of classic comedy props which she puts to good use to take us back and forth along the timeline of her life, through her younger years, motherhood, and up to her 49-year-old present day.
There’s love and loss and plenty of self- deprecating good will, and Bean is clearly both ecstatic to be in Edinburgh, and to be rolling around on the planet at all. The audience is invited to join in her joy, and it’s hard not to get swept up in her emotional enthusiasms.
Bean is a speaker, coach, educator, founder of a company called Beanology, based around inspiring people to believe in their own enoughness and to live their best lives. It’s a theme of the show that is brutally honest and chaotically funny, and at the end everyone gets to take away their own magic bean – a nice touch.
