The ever fabulous Aryna Sabalenka who was crowned “Player of the Year” and is comedian Ben Stiller’s favourite player, is seeded Number 1 for the tournament for the first time. As the two-time defending Australian Open champion, her power, precision and tenacity are going to be hard to beat. Swiatek will be seeded 2 with Gauff at number 3 and Jasmine Paolini rounding out the top 4 spots. The Australian contenders are all unseeded with Olivia Gadecki earning her way into the main draw, joined by five wildcards including Daria Saville, Alja Tomljanovic, Maya Joint, Talia Gibson and Emerson Jones. The question is, can anyone really challenge Sabalenka this year? She’s the in-form player right now and certainly earned her Number 1 seed and ranking on the WTA Tour.

In what can be described as truely inspirational, for the first time in 43 years, three Australian men are seeded at their home Grand Slam. Alex de Minaur, aka the “Demon” leads the charge seeded 8, followed by Alexei Popyrin 25th, and Jordan Thompson 27th, rounding out the top 32 players in the draw.

In further good news, ten Aussie men are in the main draw, including the ever-controversial Nick Kyrgios, a walking highlight reel known for his tweeners, jaw-dropping shots and fiery on-court antics. Kyrgios has been able to use a protected ranking due to his time out of the game as a result of injury. Chris O’Connell, Aleks Vukic, Rinky Hijikata, Thanasi Kokkinakis, James Duckworth, and Adam Walton round out the direct acceptances into the main draw with wildcards Tristan Schoolkate, Li Tu, Omar Jasika, and James McCabe are also flying the flag for Australia at this year’s event.

Nick Kyrgios’ bestie, Novak Djokovic, is seeded 7 in this year’s Australian Open, which is no doubt a shock for the man who holds 24 Grand Slam titles, with every chance to claim a record-breaking 25th this year. The seeds are taken from the ATP Rankings system, and as Djokovic failed to win a Grand Slam last year, tennis’ new young guns, Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev, and Taylor Friz, were elevated to the top four seeds. Djokovic or De Minaur are not in danger of meeting any of these rising stars until the quarters if they all make it through. Kyrgios however, who holds a grudge against the World’s best player, Jannik Sinner would relish an early-round clash with the Italian, to not just settle a score, but possibly clear the path for his best mate to make history.

And now to love – and all roads seem to lead back to the “Demon”. Proving that love and tennis don’t have to be mutually exclusive, Katie Boulter, who is seeded 22 at this year’s Australian Open, and Alex de Minaur, announced their engagement a few weeks ago on December 23. As far as we know, this is the only couple who are not only seeded in the Australian Open but might be spending their free time flipping through Bridal magazines in-between matches.

The Australian Open draw  for 2025 will take place on Thursday, January 9 at 2.30pm AEDT on the MCA steps. We will know then, where the seeds are placed, which friends, foes and lovers are destined to play and against whom, as well as what irresistibly fabulous tennis we can look forward to from Sunday 12 January for the fortnight.
