The 2025 Stella Prize Shortlist Videos

Yet again, the Stella team have partnered with six exceptional Australian actresses to bring segments of the 2025 shortlisted books to life.

The 2025 Stella Prize Shortlist is:

Black Convicts by Santilla Chingaipe (non-fiction)

Black Witness by Amy McQuire (non-fiction)

Cactus Pear For My Beloved by Samah Sabawi (non-fiction)

The Burrow by Melanie Cheng (fiction)

Theory & Practice by Michelle de Kretser (fiction)

Translations by Jumaana Abdu (fiction)

As in previous years, actors have performed sections of the shortlisted works.

Susie Youssef – Cactus Pear For My Beloved

Tiana Hogben – The Burrow,

Michelle Perera – Theory & Practice

Salme Geransar – Translations 

Founded in 2012 Stella is the major voice for gender equity and cultural change in Australian literature, and the organisation’s flagship program is the annual Stella Prize – a major literary award celebrating Australian women’s writing.

These videos were produced by Fiona Sweet and Claudia Nankervis and filmed and edited by Samantha Meuleman. Credits also to the National Theatre in St Kilda, Annie Rose Foretti from MECCA and búl and Nat Corteling.
